If you’ve been a logger for quite a few years you may have
noticed the differences between the hookaroon and pickaroon.
Or maybe you have heard the differences between the two.
But, for most people who are just newbies and don’t really
quite understand the differences between these two tools are on the right article.
Because in today’s post I’m going to talk about exactly that
and will tell you which one is the best for your specific needs.
So let’s begin!
In A Nutshell
The differences between the pickaroon and hookaroon are:
·
Pickaroon has a vintage kind of look while the
hookaroon looks modern and stylish.
·
Pickaroons sometimes are heavy then hookaroons because
of the metal spike at the end is heavy while on hookaroon the metal spike is
usually thin and light on weight.
·
Pickaroon usually has the straight metal edge
while hookaroon has a sharp bending metal edge which when hit on the wood log
maybe difficult to detach sometimes.
·
It depends on the design but usually pickaroon
has a thin handle and remains thin to the second end while hookaroon protrudes
from the handle so the last metal part gets almost all the weight which is a good
thing because even when you apply less force there is a good chance that you’ll
still be able to pick the wood up.
The Similarities
Both pickaroon and hookaroon has a similar shape in general
overall. Both serve the same purpose which is to pick up the wood logs from the
ground or any other place (in upper positions too like trucks or carts).
Both can be used to load up the trucks and so on.
Besides the similaritiesm because of some differences you can
use one tool for another purpose and the other tool for different purpose.
And that’s exactly what I’m going to cover now.
About The Pickaroon Tool
As said both the tools (pickaroon and hookaroon) has the
exact same purpose which is to work with logs.
Both the tools avoid you to bend over and over again on the
ground to pick up the logs with your bare hands.
Pickaroon however does not have any specialized use.
For example, pickaroon can do everything the hookaroon does
from migrating the cut logs from one place to another, loading up trucks,
organizing the logs and so on.
But, there’s one thing which pickaroon is not really good
at, which is to wrangle the whole lengthy tree from one place to another.
Pickaroon is not made for this purpose and it doesn’t have
enough sharpness and bended blade that it can easily be able to grab the tree
trunk for a long amount of time.
About The Hookaroon Tool
The hookaroon tool is good for a lot of things which
pickaroon is not good at.
One of the things it does is grab the whole tree trunk for a
lengthy amount of time.
Hookaroon has a thin and sharp bended blade which makes it
possible.
So if your work ethics involves this kind of things and you
do this type of work on a regular basis then definitely you can consider
hookaroon as your working tool.
The good rule of thumb is to get both the hookaroon and
pickaroon tools as both have their own pros and cons which we’ll going to discuss
in the next section.
Pros and Cons of Each Tool
Each tool has its own pros and cons and can be utilized considering
the nature of the work.
The Pros and Cons of the Pickaroon Tool
Pickaroon makes stacking wood easier. You don’t have to bend
on the ground to manage them manually.
Additional benefit is that the blade is thick and less-sharp
which means it’ll still be able to go inside the wood log but, without getting
stuck.
So even if you apply a good amount of force the blade will
go inside the log but with a minimum force you can be able to detach the blade
from the wood when you’re just placing the wood log somewhere.
On contrary, the con is you can’t be able to grab the full
piece of a tree trunk (or bigger log pieces) and be able to wrangle it for a
long period of time.
Sometimes, the piece of log may slip off if you do not apply
enough force when sticking the pickaroon on to the piece of wood.
The Pros and Cons of the Hookaroon Tool
You may have guessed the pro of a hookaroon at this point?
Which is it doesn’t slip of that easily when it’s well stucked
inside a piece of wood.
Which is important if you want to wrangle the whole tree
trunk from one place to another for some reason.
Hookaroon can be able to do this type of work easily given
that you’ve enough skill set it requires for a good usage.
The modern hookaroon comes with the barbed chisel point to
further strengthen the grip.
So Which One Should You Pick?
It depends on your specific needs. If you feel that you only
work with fire woods or small logs then you can consider buying pickaroon as it’s
well suitable for this purpose.
If you feel that further down the road you might expand your
word ethics to a point where you might have to grab a full tree trunk and you
need to transfer it from point A to point B then definitely go for a hookaroon.
In most cases, you can consider getting both so even if you
change your work type you have all the essential tools to work with.
Because if you work with just hookaroon then smaller logs might
be difficult to detach because of its bended blade edge unless you’re quite comfortable
and skilled in working with it and know the exact precise force you can apply.
This is not just about pickaroons and hookaroons it’s also
about their variations as well.
There are different types of pickaroons and hookaroons
available in the market some even come in sets with full tool kit which you can
use for almost any picking purposes.
