Pickaroon head is one of the most important aspects of the pickaroon or hookaroon.
This small steel piece (usually) is the one responsible for striking
the wood log.
And without it the whole tool is just like a liver and pretty much
useless of what the whole pickaroon with a quality head can do.
So in this post, we are going to only discuss about the pickaroon
and hookaroon heads, where you can find them and some other tips you need to
know about.
Pickaroon
And Hookaroon Head Which Material They Come In?
Most of the pickaroon and hookaroon heads come with steel head
attached to it. But, there are some other companies that manufacture the head in
metal material as well.
Kings County Tools for example, make them in a steel beak which
you can check out here.
Husqvarna is another known brand in the industry of wood working
and logs and they have made this specific product having a polished metal head which to be honest looks epic.
Can
I Just Get The Head Separately?
Well, you might be able to find them in the local market of your
area but, it’s pretty hard to find one online.
The reason is these tools mostly come as a whole so if you’re
looking just to get the pickaroon head as a replacement with your old pickaroon
head (which might be broke or twisted) then this might be a troublesome thing for
you.
I suggest going to a market where wood working tools are easily available
in your local area and talk with a merchant to see if they can help with that.
But, most of the time you’ve to make a new purchase and that’s usually
the only way you’ll get the new head as well. In that case, I’ll recommend Fiskars because they are very good at what
they do and you might already be pretty familiar with them if you’ve been into
this industry for long enough.
Ebay
however, might be able to solve your problem regardless when you’re reading
this article. But, at the time of writing this post, there are a couple of options
already listed on Ebay and thought which you can get just the pickaroon heads
and here they are:
Which
Material Do You Recommend?
As a wood worker myself I’ll not suggest a metal piece rather I’ll
go for the steel.
The reason behind is steel is much better when it comes to the
strong nature of it. In other industries like for example jewelry making they recommend
the tools to be made up of metal and not steel for that very reason.
Because metals are not that strong and are a bit sensitive comparing
to steels.
Steel on the other hand is quite strong and that’s what we need.
As wood picking is not a sensitive industry so it’s better for you
to pick the steel version of the pickaroon head.
But, it doesn’t really mater both are strong enough for you to
work with. But, if you just need a full and final advice then here it’s:
On the
scale of 10, if the metal head is 9 than steel is 10.
I hope you’ve got the exact answer now.
Which
Pickaroon Head Is Better, Forged Or A Straighter One?
I believe both are good for specific reasons. The linear head is
good when you work with shorter logs and don’t really get a chance to work with
bigger wood logs.
However, if you work with both big and short logs and even
sometimes you drag tree trunks then I’ll recommend you to go with the molded one
as it helps you to pick any kind of log regardless of its size.
It’s also good if you just work with the bigger logs and also load
the trucks for exporting purposes so you can make cash for your hard work.
Whatever option you pick make the right decisions because sometimes
the forged heads are quite hard to remove from the wood log when they got hit
on them and you might have to use a bit additional force just to remove the pickaroon
/ hookaroon from the log.
Which might be tiresome sometimes especially on a long day of work.
What
to Know About Them?
Some people are quite familiar working with lighter heads and some
people need the heavier head so they can put a little force and the pickaroon
will do the rest because of the physics concept called inertia which usually
work in to play when the pickaroon / hookaroon you have is long enough.
The
End
Here comes the end If you like the article and have gained some
information regarding the pickaroon head or, how to choose them so you can properly
work with them so comment down below this will really help continuing working on
the blog and also to keep the readers engaged with the content as well
community.
I’ll be back with more amazing posts regarding pickaroon till then
good luck making your choices.
